March 2008 GE results:

Barisan Nasional – 140 seats.

Pakatan Rakyat – 82 seats.

Out of the 140 seats won by BN, 79 seats belong to UMNO. In other words, the BN component parties consisting of MCA, MIC, Gerakan, PBB, SUPP, SPDP, PRS, UPKO, PBS, SAPP, PBRS and LDP hold 61 seats.

With the ISA detentions of RPK, Teresa Kok and Tan Hoon Cheng made essentially by UMNO’s appointed SHA in the Home ministry, what reactions can we see from members of the component parties?

a) Gerakan’s KTK said,

“Out of anger and disgust, some of our leaders have called for the use of the most stringent law.

But I agree with Rais that we should proceed with the Sedition Act and other laws first,” he said, referring to Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim’s statement on the subject.

Rais had stated on Thursday that Ahmad should not be detained under the ISA and hoped his case would go through the normal process of law. (more here and here).

b) MCA’s OTK’s take,

The MCA has expressed shock that former Bukit Bendera Umno division chairman Datuk Ahmad Ismail, who made racist remarks has not been taken to task but reporter Tan Hoon Cheng, who wrote about the incident, has been arrested instead.

“The perpetrator who vowed to conduct a nationwide roadshow on his remarks without any remorse is still at large,” MCA vice-president Datuk Ong Tee Keat said in a statement yesterday. (more here).

MCA’s OKT’s,

“We are here to serve the people. Before this, we served the community without blowing our trumpet.

“But after the general election, we know that the community not only wants to see us continue to serve them but also to speak up,” he pointed out. (more here).

From The Malaysian Insider aptly titled “An uphill task to justify ISA arrests” –

Malaysia’s Special Branch said that the racial tension in parts of the country and among certain groups in the last few days were coming close to the pre-Operation Lalang level and warned Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar that if nothing was done, the country would be on the brink of a disaster.

The Malaysian Insider has learnt that Syed Hamid briefed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on the intelligence reports by the Special Branch. (more here).

Suffice to say, any miscalculations on the part of the AAB’s administration will effectively further reduce public perception and acceptance of the government’s move to invoke the ISA. UMNO is presently going through a severe make-over from within and whatever decisions taken may appear to appease their grassroot members in view of the AI/UMNO 3-year suspension, and may negate efforts to uphold the rule of law in Malaysia.

Question is, if the internal problems of UMNO get worse, will BN component parties be held liable for the causes and effects which are not of their own doing (including the ISA arrests)? Loyalty to their own constituents should remain paramount as well as the peace and harmonious stability in this nation belonging to all Malaysians, not just the umnoputras.

Therefore, will the BN component parties stand up for the rights of the voting public and opt out of the BN coalition thereby creating the Third Front, as guardians for a better Malaysia, while UMNO goes into intensive care as soon as possible.

AI and Pakatan Rakyat can wait in the wings until the dust have settled for rational minds to come forth.

Got this from a commentator at Haris’s blog which looks like sound advice:

Shiou Says:

Dear Haris,

I have heard about a protocol used in other nation’s civil movement as a way of protecting crowds from sabotaged by infiltration during mass gatherings.

The protocol as used in the gathering goes something like this:

a) Before the gathering or at the beginning of gathering, the organizer inform every participants that if the organizer(s) shout “Sit on the ground — everyone, no exception”, then everyone must sit down.
b) During the gathering, if there is small disturbance (which could likely be infiltration from “enemy”) emerge to purposely create unrest, then the Organizer(s) can call out the exact words “Sit on the ground — everyone, no exception”. Then, pre-assigned workers shall quickly pull away anyone who refuse to sit down — and the views to seek out the ones standing up should be easy. This way the infiltration will fail to escalate the unrest.

I think the vigil and the Kelana Jaya getherings should be executed in a way preventing the infiltration from UMNO spies and instigators. We could do the prevention pretty easily with the above protocol.

The journos are going! And one journo may come out!

Update: 1700HR 13/09/08.

Tan Hoon Cheng is free!

First and foremost, please read this posting from “KerajaanRakyat”:-

Memenjarakan rakyat tanpa diberi peluang membela diri, bukan ajaran Islam. Islam menganjurkan pentadbiran yang adil dan berhemah.
Islam amat melarang penganutnya melakukan kezaliman.

Islam melarang umatnya melakukan kezaliman.

Amin Ya Rabb.

Rakyat Malaysia.

With so many punitive laws available to the AAB administration, the ISA is inexplicably the first to be applied. While we know about RPK’s ‘indiscretions’ with his ‘in your face’ articles, there is still no justification to use the ISA without considering other methods of maintaining peace, stability and harmony within the country.

Now, the ISA net has been cast wider to include Sin Chew Daily’s Tan Hoon Cheng and DAP’s Teresa Kok. On the former, the news agency was given a show cause letter by the Home ministry and although the onus is on the editor(s) to reply, it appears that the authorities have jumped the gun.  The latter got roped in for noise pollution.

TV3 nightline showed a stark contrast in replies by AAB and NTR i.e. to the question of transfer of power, AAB said that it will be futile to continue addressing a matter which was already agreed between him and NTR in July ’08, and endorsed by the UMNO supreme council whilst NTR mentioned it is up to the UMNO division heads to decide on the time-frame.

Meanwhile, we hear that TDM will be making a return to UMNO and he has declared his endorsement for TRH to contest for the UMNO presidency in December ’08. MY, the MITI minister is also supporting TDM’s re-entry into UMNO besides calling on AAB to re-consider the power transition time-frame for an earlier date instead of mid 2010.

It would appear as if AAB is under siege and/or facing a mutiny by his own party members to step down immediately in order to ‘save’ UMNO. Therefore, the only option available to AAB to maintain his position as numero uno is to create the spectre of national chaos and declare emergency controls under the NOC. This is only possible if there is anarchy on the streets and if the other side turns up as well.

A repeat of May13th is a well-worn threat used by UMNO/BN but times have changed since. The overt and covert actions used then did not take into account the currency of technology i.e. the Net, cellphones and Web 2.0 whereby the latest news are ‘user generated’. In other words, people are communicating directly with each other to know the truth without relying on the government compliant MSM.

So, are RPK, Tan Hoon Cheng and Teresa Kok (plus perhaps more) the convenient ‘scapegoats’ in the politically expedient scheme of things which is unfolding? Stay connected and be informed, folks.

I’ll leave you with another food for thought where the Barisan Rakyat Bloggers team could have been sucked into the maelstrom.

P.S. If you don’t know what temberang means, now is a good time to speak with your bi-lingual malay friends.

While we wait for further details, a thought went through my mind as to the reason(s) why RPK was arrested.

Of course, this bloke have given the authorities several ‘options’ which included the latest on the so-called seditious postings on Islam or rather, RPK’s interpretations on certain issues related to the religion.

However, is there a possibility that RPK was detained under the ISA for something he has not done yet? To be more precise, it was perhaps done to pre-empt another effort by RPK to stir up the hornet’s nest within UMNO itself. Confused? Well, if you look here, here and here, you may find all the clues lead to Putrajaya and someone there isn’t happy with the latest developments.

Since we are made to wait by the authorities to decide on a ‘sticky’ charge for RPK, why don’t you click on the image above to view a news clip. Honest reportings tend to clear up murky matters, don’t you think?

Oh yeah, one more thing. Please be so kind as to send the following SMS to your relatives, friends and colleagues:

RPK di-tahan bawah ISA. Sebagai tanda bersatu hati, anda di-jemput menghadiri perhimpunan di-stadium Kelana Jaya pada 8 mlm 15hb Sept 2008. Sila edarkan”

RPK detained under ISA. Pls come to Kelana Jaya Stadium 8pm 15th September, 2008 to show solidarity for RPK’.

Remember May 13. The government is trying to use the same methods to make people angry so that if we all take to the streets to protest, it will basically give them a free ticket to arrest more people. So we must be clear on what NOT to do. Let’s not fall into their trap.

I am being told many political party leaders are now talking about what is proper to say in public, so when commenting please exercise the same restraint.

Next, we also need to know that RPK has not associated himself to any power or position. He is just like you and me except that he means well, can swear better and can talk louder. So, there is NOTHING for the government to gain by arresting him except to perpetuate their rule and to create the emotions to help them stay in control.

People are not stupid or ignorant anymore. Today, we have the internet and mobile phones. We can always alert each other on the progress. Unlike 1969, when you are thirsty for news, you may get angry and you would go to the streets. Not today.

So stay tuned to the developments as we bring them to you. But please stay cool, keep properly informed and do not over-react.

MT team
